What is your leadership philosophy?

As a leader, it is important to have a leadership philosophy—a specific set of beliefs or rules that guide your actions—so you can make consistent choices.

Forbes.com recommends asking yourself the following four questions to help you shape your leadership philosophy.

  1. What leaders do I look up to and why? If you are struggling to begin shaping your philosophy, this is a good place to start. Artists, musicians, etc., often start their work by looking for influences, and a leader can do the same.
  2. What leaders do I disapprove of and why? Finding a leader who you do not admire can help provide you with certain rules or beliefs to avoid.
  3. What are my private beliefs? The goal is to become a truly consistent leader, and basing your leadership philosophy on how you conduct yourself privately is effective.
  4. Where do I see myself in five years? Thinking about future goals is a good way to determine your leadership philosophy. You can shape your leadership philosophy in a way that promotes qualities important for your future role.

Asking these four questions can help you better understand leadership philosophy and your own set of beliefs that guide your leadership actions.
