What has been the most surprising change in the industry since you started? Three NRCA members share their answers.
I started my roofing industry career in 1982, which means I have seen many changes through the years. The fantastic achievements in technology with product evolution, as well as the in-depth solutions consumer/contractor interactive software have delivered, stand out in my mind. The sky is the limit for our industry thanks to the technological advances of yesterday, today and what is yet to come.

The engagement of women in key roles and their enthusiasm for the industry have been the most surprising change. When I started eight years ago, there were many meetings I attended where I was the only woman. I believe the efforts in education, communication and engagement by roofing professionals in their communities around the country has raised awareness of career opportunities and led to this increase.

Since starting roofing in high school and owning my own company for more than 38 years, the biggest surprising change is the switch to single-ply roofing and the continued improvements. I don’t see anyone pulling up 5-gallon buckets of gravel with a rope and wheel anymore.
